Weekend Concert Preview

These are this weekend's shows in the Davis and Sacramento area. Recommended shows are in bold. Descriptions of the bands are in the order that I listed the bands. All shows are all ages unless otherwise noted.

Friday:

Pistol Pete, NoBunny, The Ponteens. I'm busy tonight, but if I were around, this is definitely the show I would be at. Pistol Pete has a real heavy blues sound, with some almost metal sounding virtuoso guitar, a la Stevie Vai and Joe Satriani. No Bunny plays extremely catchy upbeat pop-punk, very reminiscent of The Ramones. He's from Oakland, and he's embarking on a national tour, so catch him now. The Poonteens are a pretty traditional punk 3-piece, with serious chops and some catchy songs. Highly recommend that you get to this show. The Hub @ Sol Collective (Sac), 8:30. $5.

Sea Of Bees, Early and Often. If the other show wasn't your bag, this one will be pretty decent too. Good folk rock/indie rock, and some kinda whiny grunge/indie rock. 16th Street Cafe (formerly the Java Lounge, Sac), 8pm. $6.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Psychedelic alt-rock, done very well. Harlow's (Sac), 9:30. $20, 21+.

Moomaw, Jay Shaner, Magic No. 9. Spacey Americana/folk, and some pretty run of the mill guitar folk. Fox and Goose (Sac), 9pm. $5, 21+.

Saturday and Sunday's shows after the jump!

Saturday:

Persephones Bees, Mark Farrell, Jeepster. Female-fronted rock with a touch of 70's, gritty heavy blues, and some solid pop-rock. All three bands sound damn good, so it looks to be a very good show. Blue Lamp (Sac), 8pm. Free, 21+.

Final Summation, Capt. 9's & the Knickerbocker Trio, Phantom Jets, The Four Eyes. Catchy punk, funny catchy punk, really fantastic surf/garage rock, and some garage rock with a 90's alt sound. 4 very solid bands, and the Phantom Jets are really fantastic, definitely highly recommend it. I'd be here for sure if I were over 21. Old Ironsides (Sac), 9pm. $7, 21+.

Mountshout, The Shants, Ash Reiter. Upbeat folk with a beautiful voice, Americana, and some slightly jazzy folk. 1315 L Street (Davis), 7:30pm. Free.

Hans Grusel's Krankenkabinet, Mucky the Ducky, Caroliner Rainbow, Mama Buries. Basically, all of these bands can be described as very, very weird. John Natsoulas Gallery (Davis), 8pm. $5-10.

Absolute Zero. Alt-punk, although apparently it's going to be an acoustic show. R5 Records (Sac), 7pm. Free.

Crazy Ballhead, Mahtie Bush, Klassiq, Cadaver the Rapper. Hip/Hop show. Distillery (Sac), 9:30pm. $7, 21+.

Pine, Ayla Nereo, Helene Renaut. Another folk show, all female artists. 330 University Avenue (Davis), 7:30. Free.

Smirker, Fortress of Attitude, The Dirt Nap Band, The Electric Mime. Some straight rock, some comedy rock, and some country/bluegrass. Marylin's (Sac), 8pm. $5, 21+.

Sunday:

Tigerboy, Jen Grady, Hélène Renaut, Ayla Nereo. Folk, all female acts. The Gam (Sac), 7pm. $3.

S.J. Tucker. Folk singer. The Hub (Sac), 8pm. $6.
